Sea Change [2017]
Inkjet on paper, light tubes, steel rods
300x400x100cm
A site specific installation that uses print-outs from google maps installed in an abandoned class room of the local fisherman school. The prints show a section of ocean floor located off the Hong Kong coast. Google maps are used as an example of contemporary knowledge made available on digital platforms, a contrast to how knowledge has been presented in the spatial and social format of class room teaching and questioning the obsoletion in one form of knowledge about the ocean, against another.
The work can also be understood as a response to the luminance of the nearby city of Hong Kong, a place where the power of a commercial message is defined by its ability to eclipse its surroundings, using light as a key element.
Exhibited at Cheung Chau Wave, Hong Kong 2017
